lyrics

Winter it is past

the winter it is past
and the summer’s come at last
and the small birds are singing in the trees
their little hearts are glad
oh but I am very sad
for my true love is far away from me

and all you who are in love
and cannot it remove
I pity all the pain that you endure
for experience lets me know
that your hearts are full of woe
it’s a woe that no mortal can cure

– accordion with tune

my love is like the sun
in the firmament does run
is ever constant and true
but his is like the moon
it wanders up and doon
and is every month changing, changing

oh, livery I will wear
and I’ll comb back my hair
and in velvet so green I will appear
and it’s straight I will repair
to the Curragh of Kildare
for it’s there I’ll find tidings of my dear

– accordion with tune
{vocalise}

oh, the rose upon the briar
by the waters running clear
they may have charms for the linnet and the bee
now everything is blest
oh their little lives at rest
but my true love is far away from me

oh, the winter it is past
and the summer’s come at last
and the small birds are singing in the trees
their little hearts are glad
but mine is very sad
for my true love is far away... from me

explanations
Eddi here conflates the two versions she knows, basically using Burns’s version, with the verses re-ordered, and adding the ‘Curragh’ verse from the tradition (just after she has changed ‘changing anew’ to ‘changing, changing’ – I wonder if that was deliberate?)
