Follow my tears

I was born in the shadow
of the factory I’d be working
for me and my brothers
there was no place else to go

I married a local boy
in 1947
his hands were rough but his eyes were kind
and I knew our love would grow

{spoken:} from my eyes
from my eyes to the river
{spoken:} from the river to the sea
{from the} river to the sea
from the sea to the darkening clouds
from the sky back down to me

follow my tears
follow my tears

we sailed for New Zealand
I was carrying our second daughter
and there, there on the dockside
I never knew they were last goodbyes

the first time I saw Wellington
my heart would not stop racing
we had come half way around the world
to start our new lives

ho-wah, oo-wah, oo-wah, oo-wah [etc.]
carry, carry [Anna]

now John was an engineer
and he worked until the day he died
he left me wanting nothing
for thirty years this was our home

I am by myself now
the children call me now and then
his hands were rough but his eyes were kind
and I knew our love would grow

{spoken:} from my eyes
from my eyes to the river
from the river to the sea
from the sea to the darkening clouds
from the sky back down to me

follow my tears
follow my tears

Auld lang syne

should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind
should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne

for auld lang syne, my jo
for auld lang syne
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet
for auld lang syne

and here’s a hand, my trusty friend {spoken:} join
and gie’s a hand of thine
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet
for auld lang syne

for auld lang syne, my jo
for auld lang syne
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet
for auld lang syne

commentary
Eddi just about fits the first couplet of ‘Auld lang syne’ over the harmonic structure of the playout of ‘Follow my tears’; the instruments join in piecemeal in ‘Auld lang syne’, busking their way through the last chorus, suggesting that inclusion of this song was a spur of the moment thing
